Captain America # 1 2025 NM

Captain America # 1 July 2, 2025 (Volume 12) launches a major "hard reboot" of Steve Rogers' story by writer Chip Zdarsky and artist Valerio Schiti. This series modernizes the character's continuity by shifting his thawing from the ice to the post-9/11 era of the early 2000s. 

A Man Out of Time (Again)

The issue retells Steve Rogers' awakening into a world that has moved on significantly during his decades in suspended animation. 

• The Adjustment: Set just one week after his thawing, the story follows Steve as he struggles with culture shock—such as not knowing what the United Nations is—and initially declines an offer to join the Avengers.
• First Mission: Re-enlisting in the U.S. Army under General Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross, Steve is tasked with a clandestine mission to infiltrate Latveria.
• Doctor Doom: The arc explores the previously untold first canonical encounter between Captain America and a fledgling dictator named Victor Von Doom. 

Introduction of David Colton

A major subplot introduces David Colton, a new character whose journey mirrors Steve’s origin but is set in the 21st century. 

• Post-9/11 Origin: Colton is a frail, red-haired young man inspired to enlist after witnessing the September 11 attacks.
• The Next Super Soldier: Despite physical ailments like asthma, Colton’s resilience leads him to be selected for a modern variation of the Super-Soldier Serum.
• The Future: The issue reveals that Colton successfully becomes a new Captain America, shown in flash-forwards serving during the Iraq War. 

• The Howling Commandos: Steve leads a new iteration of this unit, which includes new members like Mendoza and Slate.
• Stealth Suit: The issue features the debut of a new Captain America stealth uniform designed for high-stakes, extra-governmental missions.
• Style: Critics noted the grounded, action-thriller tone that juxtaposes Golden Age heroism with the darker, more ambiguous complexities of the War on Terror era.
