Captain America # 2 released August 2011 continues the "American Dreamers" story arc in Volume 6 of the series. Following the attack at Peggy Carter's funeral in the previous issue, Steve Rogers and Nick Fury delve deeper into a conspiracy involving a long-forgotten World War II mission.

The issue balances high-stakes action with a mystery rooted in the 1940s:

  • The Mission Secrets: Flashbacks reveal details of a 1944 operation called Codename: Bravo, which involved Steve, Peggy Carter, and a group of idealistic young heroes. The mission ended in tragedy, leaving many of Steve's old friends presumed dead or lost.
  • The Dream World: Steve and Nick Fury learn that their old ally Jimmy Jupiter, who has the power to create and enter a "dream-world," is the key to the current threat. The villainous Bravo is using Jimmy's powers to manipulate reality and strike at the present day.
  • Hydra’s Involvement: While Steve battles specialized Hydra squads using advanced teleportation technology, it becomes clear that Bravo has formed an alliance with a mysterious new leader known as the Hydra Queen.
  • The Attack on Steve: The issue concludes with a dramatic ambush. While Steve is at his apartment, he is suddenly attacked through a window by the Ameridroid, a giant robotic construct that accuses him of "stealing his dream".
  • Creative Team: Written by Ed Brubaker with art by Steve McNiven.
  • Key First Appearances: This issue features the first cameo appearance of the Hydra Queen (named).
  • Core Theme: The story explores the concept of "Old Friends, New Enemies," contrasting the idealistic patriotism of the 1940s with the cynical reality of the modern age.
