Captain America and the Falcon # 1 2004 launched a new series written by Christopher Priest with art by Bart Sears. It begins the "Two Americas" story arc, characterized by political intrigue and a darker tone than typical superhero stories.

The issue follows a dual narrative that jumps between the present in Cuba and flashbacks in New York City:

  • The Mission: The Falcon (Sam Wilson) has gone rogue to rescue his former girlfriend, reporter Leila Taylor, who was detained by the U.S. Navy at Guantanamo Bay for investigating the Rivas drug cartel.
  • The Pursuit: S.H.I.E.L.D. gives Steve Rogers 24 hours to bring Sam in before they take more drastic measures.
  • The Imposter: A "Captain America" figure arrives in Cuba and brutally cuts through a local militia to find Sam. The ending reveals this is not Steve Rogers, but a violent "dark doppelgänger" later known as the Anti-Cap.

Key Characters and First Appearances

  • Steve Rogers (Captain America): Struggling with his friend's rogue actions and his own role in the government's agenda.
  • Sam Wilson (Falcon): Acting as a fugitive to protect a friend from a political conspiracy.
  • Anti-Cap (Debut): A "Super-Sailor" created by a rogue Navy Intelligence unit, serving as a violent foil to Steve Rogers.
  • Alisande Morales (Debut): A S.H.I.E.L.D. agent who becomes a key supporting character in the series.
  • Writer: Christopher Priest
  • Artist: Bart Sears
  • Release Date: March 2004
