Captain America Annual # 1 September 19, 2018 is a standalone World War II story that explores the humanitarian side of Steve Rogers' heroism. The story follows Captain America and Bucky on a scouting mission in 1944. They discover an old farmhouse where three refugees who escaped from a Nazi concentration camp are hiding:

  • Marta: A Romani woman who was subjected to medical experiments.
  • Iskra: A Jewish woman.
  • Volya: A Russian man who was imprisoned for being gay.

Cap and Bucky choose to defend the farmhouse against a German patrol rather than continuing their mission. After a long night of fending off the enemy, the heroes successfully lead the refugees to a radio tower and coordinate a rescue with Dum Dum Dugan and the Howling Commandos.

  • Forgotten Victims: The issue highlights groups often overlooked in historical fiction about the Holocaust, specifically the persecution of the Romani and LGBTQ+ individuals.
  • Core Heroism: Critics praised the issue for distilling Captain America's character to its roots: simple, effective compassion in the face of overwhelming evil.
  • Historical Accuracy: The story is noted for its attention to the grim historical reality of the era, balanced with classic "Nazi-punching" action.
  • Writer: Tini Howard (this was her Marvel debut).
  • Artists: Chris Sprouse and Ron Lim.
  • Inkers: Karl Story, Walden Wong, and Scott Hanna.
  • Colorists: Jesus Aburtov, Erick Arciniega, and Israel Silva.
