Captain America: Patriot # 1 is the debut of a four-issue limited series published by Marvel Comics in September 2010. The series retells the origin and career of Jeffrey Mace, the third person to serve as Captain America in Marvel continuity.

The issue follows reporter Jeffrey Mace's transformation from an ordinary journalist into a national symbol:

  • The Inspiration: In 1941, Daily Bugle reporter Jeff Mace witnesses Steve Rogers in action during a Nazi sabotage attempt at a Brooklyn shipyard. Inspired by Rogers, Mace dons his own costume to fight saboteurs as the Patriot.
  • Homefront Hero: Unlike Steve Rogers, Mace has no super-soldier serum. He leads the Liberty Legion, a group of heroes protecting the U.S. homefront while the Invaders fight overseas.
  • Unexpected Offer: After the war ends in 1946, Mace finds the second Captain America (William Naslund) mortally wounded following a battle with a robot. After Naslund dies, the FBI recruits Mace to take up the mantle to ensure the symbol of Captain America does not die with the man.
  • Creative Team: Written by Karl Kesel with art by Mitch Breitweiser and colors by Elizabeth Breitweiser.
  • Release Date: September 15, 2010 (with a November 2010 cover date).
  • Significance: It serves as a modern retelling of Jeff Mace's transition from the Patriot to the third Captain America, clarifying complex Golden Age continuity.
