Captain America: Steve Rogers # 1 2016 is a landmark issue in Marvel Comics history, famous for the controversial revelation that Steve Rogers was a secret agent of Hydra. Published on May 25, 2016, it launched a new solo series during the Civil War II event while Sam Wilson was also active as Captain America.
The "Hail Hydra" Twist
The issue ends with a shocking cliffhanger where Steve Rogers betrays his ally, Jack Flag, by throwing him from a plane and uttering the words "Hail Hydra".
- The In-Universe Explanation: Reality was rewritten by Kobik, a sentient Cosmic Cube in the form of a young girl. Manipulated by the Red Skull, Kobik altered Steve’s memories and history so that he believed he had been a Hydra sleeper agent since childhood.
- The Outcome: This version of Steve, known as Hydra Supreme, eventually attempted a global takeover in the 2017 Secret Empire event before being defeated by the restored, "true" Captain America.
- The Return: Following the Avengers: Standoff! event, a previously aged Steve Rogers is restored to his youthful, super-soldier prime.
- New Status Quo: Steve returns to the field with a new triangular shield and a team that includes Sharon Carter, Free Spirit, and Jack Flag.
- Hydra Resurgence: The Red Skull revitalizes Hydra as a grassroots terrorist organization, recruiting disillusioned individuals by exploiting contemporary fears and insecurities.
