Captain America: What Price Glory? # 1 March 5, 2003 is the first of a four-part weekly limited series. It presents a street-level, noir-inspired mystery set between the conclusion of Captain America (Vol. 3) and the 2002 "Marvel Knights" relaunch.

The story begins in Brooklyn, where Steve Rogers visits his friend Sal Letcher, a disabled Gulf War veteran. For his birthday, Sal asks Steve for a vicarious "gift": to dance with a beautiful girl just for him.

Soon after, Steve is approached by Charles Frizini, a businessman whose daughter, Pasha, has been taken to Las Vegas by a mobster named Anthony Sanquino (using the alias Nicoli Spano). Although Steve is initially hesitant to get involved in what seems like a private matter, several events change his mind:

  • A Personal Connection: Steve encounters a local baker who has been brutally beaten by thugs.
  • The Vegas Lead: After tracking down and defeating the attackers as Captain America, he finds a matchbook from a Las Vegas casino in one of their pockets.
  • Departure: Realizing the mob's reach extends to his own neighborhood, Steve decides to head west to Sin City to rescue Pasha and investigate the corruption.
  • The Cost of Heroism: The series explores the psychological toll of Steve's life-long mission and whether he can ever truly be "happy" outside of his role as a soldier.
  • Noir Mystery: Unlike typical cosmic or world-threatening threats, this story focuses on organized crime, undercover infiltration, and moral ambiguity.
  • Humanity: Much of the issue focuses on Steve Rogers out of costume, emphasizing his relationships and personal struggles.
  • Writer: Bruce Jones
  • Penciler: Steve Rude (known for a classic, Kirby-influenced style)
  • Inker: Mike Royer
  • Colorist: Chris Sotomayor
