Captain America: Who Will Wield the Shield? # 1 2010 is a one-shot comic that serves as the immediate aftermath of the Captain America: Reborn miniseries. It addresses the status of the Captain America mantle following Steve Rogers' resurrection.

The story explores the internal conflict between Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes regarding who should officially be Captain America.

  • Bucky’s Tenure: Bucky Barnes has established himself as the new Captain America during Steve's absence and feels he has finally found his place in the role.
  • The Mission: Steve Rogers, still adjusting to being back in the present day, joins Black Widow on a mission to stop the villain Mister Hyde. During the fight, Steve instinctively catches Bucky's shield and uses it to defeat Hyde, demonstrating that his skills remain sharp.
  • The Decision: Following the battle, Steve and Bucky have a heart-to-heart talk. Steve recognizes that the mantle has helped Bucky find redemption and purpose. He officially asks Bucky to continue as Captain America while Steve takes on a new role as Commander Steve Rogers, leading the Avengers and working directly with the U.S. government.
  • Presidential Pardon: The issue concludes with Steve meeting the President, who grants him a full pardon for his actions during the Superhuman Registration Act (Civil War), noting that the act was "too un-American".
  • Creative Team: Written by Ed Brubaker with art by Butch Guice and Luke Ross.
  • Release Date: Published December 23, 2009 (with a February 2010 cover date).
  • Core Theme: Identity and the passing of a legacy, establishing a status quo where two "Captains" exist simultaneously in the Marvel Universe.
