Catwoman #1 , released in August 1993, launched the character's first ongoing solo series. Set during the Batman: Knightfall crossover event, the issue portrays Selina Kyle as a wealthy socialite by day and a master thief working under duress for Bane by night.
The issue begins with Catwoman successfully pulling off a museum heist. The plot is driven by her unwilling association with Bane, who is currently in control of Gotham after breaking Batman's back.

Working for Bane: Catwoman, while not pleased, is forced to give her stolen goods to her fence, Leopold, who then passes them to Bane. Her true identity, Selina Kyle, remains a secret, which impresses Bane.

Taking in a Runaway: In her civilian life, Selina has taken in a young runaway named Arizona, whom she previously saved from an attacker.

The Hitman: Bane learns an assassin named Guillermo is in town to kill him. Bane decides to use Catwoman as bait, using Leopold's lack of loyalty to set her up.

A Fiery Cliffhanger: Guillermo gets Catwoman's location from Leopold. The issue ends with Guillermo firing a rocket launcher at Selina's apartment building, which explodes with her and Arizona inside.
