Chainsaw Man # 1 (Dog & Chainsaw) is the debut chapter of Tatsuki Fujimoto's dark fantasy manga, first published in 2018. It introduces Denji, a teenager living in extreme poverty to pay off his deceased father's massive debt to the Yakuza. 

Story Summary 

• The Debt: Denji survives by hunting "Devils"—monsters born from human fear—using his pet devil-dog, Pochita, who has a chainsaw-like nose. To scrape together money, he sells his organs (kidney, eye, and a testicle) and even eats a cigarette for 100 yen.
• The Betrayal: The Yakuza lure Denji to an abandoned warehouse under the guise of a job, only to reveal they have made a contract with the Zombie Devil. Denji and Pochita are brutally dismembered and thrown into a dumpster.
• The Fusion: While dying, Pochita makes a contract with Denji, sacrificing its own body to become Denji's heart. In exchange, Pochita asks Denji to "show him his dreams"—the simple life of eating bread with jam and having a girlfriend that they often discussed.
• The Transformation: Denji awakens as a human-devil hybrid. By pulling the chainsaw cord protruding from his chest, he transforms into "Chainsaw Man," with chainsaws growing from his head and arms. He uses this power to slaughter the Zombie Devil and the zombified mob.
• The Recruitment: In the aftermath, a woman named Makima, a high-ranking Public Safety Devil Hunter, arrives. She offers Denji two choices: die as a devil or live as her "pet". Enticed by the promise of real food (bread with butter and jam), Denji agrees to join her.
