Convergence: Aquaman #1 (2015) is the first part of a two-issue miniseries within the larger Convergence event, focusing on the pre-Flashpoint version of Arthur Curry (Aquaman) and his wife, Mera. The issue was written by Tony Bedard with art by Ron Marz.

Plot Synopsis

The story finds Aquaman trapped under the dome that has covered the city of Metropolis for an entire year. During this time, all superpowers have been nullified.

  • A King Without a Kingdom: Stripped of his powers and kingdom, Arthur Curry is depicted as a man struggling with purposelessness on dry land. He's grown a beard, wears street clothes, and spends his days lifting weights and brooding, feeling marginalized and useless without the ocean.
  • Mera's Concern: His wife, Mera, is equally frustrated by their situation, but she is more proactive, trying to keep their spirits up and maintain hope for a return to the sea.
  • The Dome Drops: When the dome finally falls, Arthur's powers are restored. The living planet Telos announces that the cities must fight each other. Arthur, driven by a desire to get back to the sea and his people, immediately jumps into action.
  • The Opponents: Aquaman and Mera's city is pitted against the city of Deathstroke from the Future's End timeline (a gritty, five-years-later vision of the DC Universe).
  • The Conflict: The issue is primarily about Aquaman regaining his sense of purpose and power. He quickly gets his iconic orange and green suit back and reclaims his position as a king and a hero, just in time to face Deathstroke's brutal forces in the streets of Metropolis.

Key Characters

  • Arthur Curry (Aquaman): The pre-Flashpoint version, a more traditional and noble depiction of the character.
  • Mera: Aquaman's wife and partner, with the power of hydrokinesis (water manipulation).
  • Deathstroke (Slade Wilson): The tactical, ruthless mercenary from the Future's End future, who serves as the primary antagonist for this miniseries.
