Convergence: Crime Syndicate #1 (2015), written by Brian Buccellato with art by Phil Winslade, stars the evil counterparts of the Justice League from the pre-Crisis on Infinite Earths Earth-3, who are trapped without their powers and facing a moral crisis. The story also features the heroes of the 853rd century's Justice Legion Alpha as their opponents in the Convergence event.
Plot Synopsis
The city of the Crime Syndicate has been trapped under a dome for a year, leaving its members powerless.
- Superwoman's Fate: The story opens with a powerless Superwoman (Lois Lane in this reality) on death row for the accidental killing of Bruno Mannheim. In a rare moment of introspection, she expresses remorse for her villainous life as she awaits execution.
- The Escape Attempt: The rest of the Syndicate—Ultraman, Owlman, Power Ring, and Johnny Quick—attempt a daring, but ultimately failed, rescue mission to save Superwoman from the electric chair. They are thwarted by the local police, the Rogue Hunters.
- The Dome Drops: Just as the Syndicate members are being shackled and led away, the dome is lifted by Telos. Their powers instantly return, and they turn on their captors to get revenge for Superwoman's execution.
- The Justice Legion Alpha: Meanwhile, in a different domed city from the 853rd century, the heroes of the Justice Legion Alpha are under attack by Lincoln Luthor and his forces. Tensions rise between their Batman and Superman over how to handle the situation, as they too regain their powers.
- The Tournament: Both teams are then mysteriously transported to a "Battleground" where Telos forces them to fight each other for the survival of their respective cities. The issue ends as Ultraman initiates the fight by attacking the 853rd-century Superman.
Key Themes
The issue explores why a "hero" or "villain" should fight to save a city that hates or fears them. The Crime Syndicate struggles with the concept of altruism, while the Justice Legion Alpha debates the morality of lethal force in their desperate situation, highlighting the different ethical codes between the two worlds.
