Convergence: Plastic Man and the Freedom Fighters #1 (2015), written by Simon Oliver with art by John McCrea and Dexter Vines, features the return of the Freedom Fighters from the pre-Crisis Earth-X, a world where the Nazis won World War II.

Plot Synopsis

For a year, the city of Metropolis has been domed by Brainiac. Within this contained world, the heroes of Earth-X have been living without their powers.

  • Life Under the Dome: The issue opens as a grim character study. On Earth-X, the heroes were constantly at war. Under the dome, they are forced to deal with peace for the first time, and many are struggling.
    • Uncle Sam is fading away, as the American spirit he embodies is absent in the domed, quiet city.
    • Plastic Man (Eel O'Brian) is shown working as a police officer, struggling with the concept of following rules after a lifetime of anarchy and heroics.
  • The Dome Drops: When the dome is lifted by Telos, the heroes' powers return, and the tournament begins. The city is pitted against the Gen-13 team from the Wildstorm Universe.
  • The Conflict: The two teams quickly clash. The Gen-13 members, with their edgy 90s aesthetic, are shocked to be fighting "Golden Age" characters.
  • The Cliffhanger: The Freedom Fighters, led by a revitalized Uncle Sam, are quickly overwhelmed by the Gen-13 team's raw power. The issue ends with the heroes in a desperate fight for survival, facing foes who represent a wildly different era and style of comic books.

Key Characters

  • Plastic Man (Eel O'Brian): The central figure, adapting from a life of anarchy to law enforcement.
  • Uncle Sam: The fading spirit of America, whose power wanes with a lack of belief.
  • Gen-13: A group of super-powered teenagers from the Wildstorm universe who are the Freedom Fighters' opponents.
