Convergence: Suicide Squad #1 (2015), written by Frank Tieri with art by Tom Mandrake, features the Zero Hour version of the Suicide Squad, led by Amanda Waller, as they deal with a year of powerlessness before being tasked with a deadly mission against the heroes of the Kingdom Come universe.
Plot Synopsis
For a year, the city of Metropolis has been trapped under Brainiac's dome, nullifying all superpowers. The issue explores how this affects the villains:
- A New Normal: Characters like Deadshot and Captain Boomerang were highly valued because their non-meta-human skills remained intact. Deadshot even takes a job to kill a now-powerless Superman for Toyman.
- The Dome Drops: As the dome is lifted by Telos, powers are restored (Toyman is quickly shot by Deadshot, who keeps the money), and the tournament for survival is announced.
- Amanda Waller's Mission: General Lane contacts a reluctant Amanda Waller, now a councilwoman, to reassemble "Task Force X" (the Suicide Squad). Their mission is to take on the city from the Kingdom Come reality.
- The Opponent: Their specific target is the immensely powerful, turbocharged Green Lantern (Alan Scott) from Kingdom Come, who has absorbed his lantern and created a floating fortress called New Oa that threatens Metropolis.
- Assembling the Team: Waller recruits a new team of villains, including Bane, Black Manta, Deathstroke, Star Sapphire (Carol Ferris), and the controversial addition of Cyborg Superman. The issue ends with the team formed and the brilliant Oracle (Barbara Gordon) already working on a plan to have the enemy's Lex Luthor betray his world to the Squad.
The story is a "getting the band together" narrative that establishes the high stakes and the moral ambiguity of the mission, all while hinting at a grim future where Waller lies dying.
