Convergence: Supergirl: Matrix #1 (2015) is a tie-in issue to the larger Convergence event, focusing on the Matrix Supergirl from the Pre-Zero Hour timeline as she attempts to help her city survive the inter-dimensional battle royale. The story is known for its comedic tone and features guest appearances by other obscure characters.
Story Synopsis
The issue opens in the domed city of Metropolis (from the Pre-Zero Hour continuity), which has been trapped on the planet Telos by Brainiac for a year. The protoplasmic entity known as Matrix, who has taken on the form of Supergirl, is a bodyguard to the Lex Luthor II of that time.
- Lex's Scheme: As the dome begins to fall and the champions of each city are called to battle for survival, Lex Luthor, ever the self-interested manipulator, gives Supergirl a device and a mission. He asks her to find a "teleportation finder thingy" that might offer a way to get off the planet, though he pretends it's for the benefit of Metropolis.
- The Battle: Supergirl sets off and quickly encounters Lord Volt and Lady Quark, the champions of Electropolis. The pair were created as minor characters during the original Crisis on Infinite Earths and are now portrayed as a constantly bickering, unhappily married couple who were forced into a political marriage.
- Bickering & Action: Their constant arguing and verbal barbs prevent a serious fight from immediately breaking out, much to Supergirl's relief, as she is more interested in following her signal. When they finally do engage, Supergirl is able to quickly dispatch both of them, punching Lord Volt and using her telekinesis to knock Lady Quark across the city.
- The Reveal: Supergirl follows the beeping device, all the while being berated by Lex's voice coming through it. In frustration, she smashes the device, only to realize she has likely destroyed their only hope of escape. On the final page, a voice from nearby warns her not to expect sanctuary elsewhere, and the character is revealed to be Ambush Bug, a meta-fictional, humor-oriented character, setting up the second issue.
