Convergence: Superman: Man of Steel #1 (2015) is a tie-in issue focusing on the Steel (John Henry Irons) from the Pre-Flashpoint continuity as he grapples with the loss of Superman and the dome's effects, while facing an invasion from the Future's End universe's cyborgs.

Story Synopsis

The story is set in the domed city of Metropolis from the Pre-Flashpoint (pre-New 52) timeline.

  • A Year Without Superman: The city has been under a dome for a year, cutting off all inhabitants' powers. For John Henry Irons, this is doubly difficult as Superman has been fighting a losing battle in the main Convergence miniseries (#3-5), and Irons feels helpless to assist. The dome has left him a depressed and defeated man, struggling with existential dread.
  • The Dome Falls, Powers Return: When the dome is finally lifted, Irons' power suit is reactivated. He immediately feels a renewed sense of purpose and the weight of his "S" shield emblem.
  • The Future's End Invasion: The city's opponent is a grim, dystopian future version of Metropolis from the Future's End timeline. The champions of this future are a relentless army of Brother Eye cyborgs.
  • Steel vs. Cyborgs: The majority of the issue focuses on Steel single-handedly battling the invading cyborg army in a desperate attempt to protect his city. The conflict is a stark contrast between Steel's heroic ideals and the soulless, machine-like nature of his opponents.
  • The Cliffhanger: The issue ends with Steel fighting a seemingly endless war against the cyborgs, putting the "Man of Steel" mantle to the test without Superman by his side.
