Convergence: The Atom #2 (2015) concludes the miniseries by revealing the fate of Ryan Choi, restoring Ray Palmer's full powers, and delivering a confrontation with Deathstroke.

Plot Synopsis

Following the cliffhanger from the first issue, Ray Palmer learns that the voice in his head for the past year was not a sign of insanity, but the consciousness of his successor, the deceased Ryan Choi, who survived his murder by willing himself into the "Mass-Zone" (the dimension the Atom's mass goes to when he shrinks).

  • Defeating Barracuda: Bolstered by this revelation, Ray attacks his opponent, Barracuda from Earth-8, with renewed vigor. Realizing Ryan is using his right hand to communicate and manifest partially, Ray sacrifices his own left hand, which Barracuda severs at the wrist. Ray urges Ryan to use the mass of the severed limb to form a new body.
  • The Return of Ryan Choi: Ryan does just that, forming a new body for himself. He then shrinks down and enters Barracuda's body, effectively neutralizing the Extremist and winning the battle.
  • The Final Confrontation: Later, Ray is in a hospital bed recovering when Deathstroke, who had been quietly living in Metropolis during the domed year, arrives to finish the job and kill the original Atom. Ryan, who knew Slade would be unable to resist killing a weakened target, leaps out of the Atom's belt, and together they fight the assassin.
  • Justice and Restoration: The two Atoms manage to defeat Deathstroke by wrapping the shrink-belt around his and Ray's hands. They activate the belt, which "redistributes" mass, restoring Ray's severed hand to normal while leaving Deathstroke with two tiny, unusable baby hands. The issue ends with Ray introducing Ryan to his friend Maria and offering him a job at their physics lab, as they plan to continue working together as a team.
