Damage # 1 1994 titled "Who Is Damage?", debuted on March 8, 1994 (cover dated April 1994). It launched a new series as part of the "Modern Age" era of DC Comics.
The story introduces Grant Emerson, a teenager who has spent much of his life moving between cities due to his parents' nomadic lifestyle.
- The Manifestation: While at his new high school in Marietta, Georgia, Grant is suddenly attacked by the Superman villain Metallo.
- Destructive Power: During the fight, Grant’s dormant metahuman abilities manifest as explosive concussive energy. In a panic, he releases a massive blast that destroys his high school and nearly vaporizes Metallo.
- The Mystery: Grant realizes his life is forever changed and sets out to find his parents and uncover the truth behind his devastating powers.
- Grant Emerson (Damage): The first appearance of this character, later revealed to be the son of the original Golden Age Atom, Al Pratt.
- Metallo: The primary antagonist sent to "test" Grant’s powers.
