Dark Knight III: The Master Race Book One, released in November 2015, begins the final chapter of Frank Miller's Dark Knight trilogy, set three years after the events of The Dark Knight Strikes Again. The issue establishes a world where Batman is presumed dead and introduces the threat of the Kandorians (a "master race" of Kryptonians) preparing to invade Earth.

The first book sets the stage for a new large-scale conflict, showing the state of the world's heroes and the looming threat.

  • Batman's Return & The Twist: Batman appears in Gotham, brutally taking down several police officers. Commissioner Ellen Yindel, who is now in charge, arrives on the scene and unmasks the beaten vigilante, only to reveal it is Carrie Kelley (the previous Robin), who tells Yindel that Bruce Wayne is dead.
  • Wonder Woman & Lara: Wonder Woman is seen on Paradise Island with her young son, Jonathan. Her powerful daughter, Lara, visits the Fortress of Solitude where her father, Superman, is frozen in ice. Lara discovers a distress signal from the bottled city of Kandor.
  • The Kandorian Threat: The signal is from the shrunken inhabitants of Kandor. They have tricked the Atom (Ray Palmer) into restoring them to full size, but rather than integrating with humanity, they believe themselves to be a "master race" and plan to conquer Earth, questioning why they should be subservient to humans.
  • The Mini-Comic Tie-In: A supplemental mini-comic (a feature of the series) focuses on the Atom, Ray Palmer, being confronted by Lara and a Kandorian named Baal, who demands he enlarge all of Kandor's inhabitants.
