Darker Image # 1, published by Image Comics in March 1993, is a one-shot anthology that served as an introduction to three new "grim and gritty" characters: The Maxx, Bloodwulf, and Deathblow. Intended as the first issue of a four-part miniseries, only this single issue was ever published.
Story Synopses
The comic features three separate, short stories by the characters' creators:
- "The Maxx": Written and penciled by Sam Kieth, this segment depicts the Maxx in his "Outback" dream world, being chased by a creature called Ret'qark'n of the God Clan. He phases into the reality of social worker Julie Winters, who sedates him, highlighting the character's dual existence in both a fantastical and a mundane world.
- "Bloodwulf": Created and written by Rob Liefeld, this story follows the intergalactic bounty hunter Bloodwulf as he infiltrates the moon Praxon 9 to kill an administrator for a personal insult. He leaves a package that destroys the moon, establishing his violent and humorous nature. The character is widely seen as a parody of DC Comics' Lobo.
- "Deathblow": Written by Jim Lee and Brandon Choi, with art by Jim Lee, this segment focuses on International Operations operative Michael Cray, code name Deathblow, in Costa Mesa. He executes a boat captain and sets up a conflict with his former subordinate, Lt. J.L. Conrad, who is being fed false information that Cray has gone rogue.
Collectible Information
The original issue was released in a polybagged format and included one of three possible collectible trading cards featuring The Maxx, Bloodwulf, or Deathblow.
