Darkhold: Pages from the Book of Sins # 1 October 1992 is the debut issue of a horror-centric Marvel series that follows a trio of humans tasked with retrieving cursed pages of the Darkhold, an ancient book of black magic.

"Black Letter"

The issue begins with an encounter between a mysterious, sinister Dwarf and a businessman named Donald J. Walsh. The Dwarf offers Walsh a black envelope containing a lost page from the Darkhold that promises to grant his deepest desires.

  • The Transformation: After accepting the deal, Walsh is transformed into a monstrous entity composed of "Chameleon Worms" that must feed on others to survive.
  • The Mission: The narrative introduces Victoria Montesi, a physician who experiences psychic nightmares whenever a Darkhold page is used. Her father, a priest, reveals their family's secret duty to safeguard the Book of Sins.
  • The Climax: Victoria, joined by Interpol agent Sam Buchanan, tracks the mystical energy to Walsh's estate. They encounter Louise Hastings, an occultist friend of Victoria's, and are soon joined by Ghost Rider and Johnny Blaze, who are hunting the demon-mother Lilith. Together, they battle the worm-creature Walsh.

The Darkhold Redeemers

This issue marks the first full appearance of the team that would become known as the Darkhold Redeemers:

  • Victoria Montesi: A doctor who feels "stings" from the Darkhold and is the last of a bloodline destined to oppose it.
  • Sam Buchanan: A skeptical Interpol agent assigned to protect Victoria.
  • Professor Louise Hastings: An expert occultist with vast knowledge of the Darkhold's history.

Rise of the Midnight Sons

This issue is Part 4 of 6 in the "Rise of the Midnight Sons" crossover event, which launched Marvel's supernatural "Midnight Sons" line. The story continues from Morbius the Living Vampire #1 and leads into Nightstalkers #1. The original printing was notably sold in a polybag with a bonus collector's poster.
