Deadpool #1 (1993) refers to the first issue of the character's first-ever solo miniseries, titled Deadpool: The Circle Chase. This four-part miniseries was written by Fabian Nicieza with art by Joe Madureira and provided key early details about Deadpool's character and past.

Plot Synopsis

The story in issue #1, and the miniseries as a whole, revolves around the aftermath of the death of the crime lord Tolliver, Deadpool's former employer.

  • The Inheritance: Tolliver's will leaves his entire estate, including a powerful ultimate weapon, to whoever is the last man or entity standing with a connection to him. This sets off a mercenary "circle chase" for the prize, and everyone who ever worked for Tolliver becomes a target.
  • Wade's Motive: Deadpool (Wade Wilson) gets involved primarily to find his ex-girlfriend and fellow shape-shifter, Vanessa Carlysle (Copycat), who is also being targeted due to her past ties to Tolliver.
  • Conflicts: In this first issue, Deadpool is in Sarajevo with his friend Weasel, trying to get information, when he is attacked by the cybernetic hero Garrison Kane (Weapon X), who is also looking for Vanessa. Elsewhere, Black Tom Cassidy and the Juggernaut are introduced, with Black Tom having undergone a horrific genetic process that is turning him into a tree-like creature. Nyko, the brother of Tolliver's deceased valet Pico, puts a hit contract on Deadpool.
  • Tone: The comic presents a grittier, less "sassy" version of Deadpool compared to later iterations, focusing on the dark action and complex, interconnected backstories with other characters from the X-Force corner of the Marvel Universe.
