Death of the New Gods # 1 October 17, 2007, launched an eight-issue miniseries that served as a major prelude to the Final Crisis event. It depicts a mysterious killer systematically hunting and murdering the inhabitants of both New Genesis and Apokolips.

The issue, titled "So Begins... THE END," explores the growing dread in the Fourth World as powerful New Gods are found dead with signature holes blasted through their chests. 

• The First Victims: The story highlights the discovery of the bodies of The Black Racer (Willie Walker) and Magnar.
• Darkseid's Reaction: Sensing an imminent threat, Darkseid recalls his most powerful minions—including Kalibak, Desaad, and a resurrected Virman Vundabar—to defend Apokolips.
• The Turning Point: The issue ends on a tragic note when Mister Miracle (Scott Free) returns home to find his wife, Big Barda, murdered in their kitchen with the same mysterious chest wound.
