Fallen Friend: The Death of Ms. Marvel # 1 is a special anthology one-shot published by Marvel Comics on July 12, 2023. It serves as a funeral and memorial issue for Kamala Khan (Ms. Marvel) following her controversial death in Amazing Spider-Man #26.
The issue reunited several major writers and artists from Kamala's history to tell three distinct stories:
- Writers: G. Willow Wilson (co-creator), Saladin Ahmed, and Mark Waid.
- Artists: Takeshi Miyazawa, Humberto Ramos, and Andrea Di Vito.
- Cover Art: Main cover by Kaare Andrews; variants by Carmen Carnero, Adrian Alphona, and Pablo Villalobos.
The story is set at a memorial service (khatm) held at Kamala's local mosque in Jersey City, bringing together both her civilian friends and the superhero community.
- Chapter 1: Kamala (by Wilson & Miyazawa): Focuses on her civilian life. Her inner circle (Bruno, Nakia, Sheikh Abdullah) must maintain her secret identity as heroes like Wolverine and Captain Marvel arrive to pay their respects.
- Chapter 2: Champion (by Waid & Ramos): Focuses on her teen teammates, the Champions. It explores their grief, specifically focusing on Viv Vision’s struggle to process loss through her robotic "emotion chip".
- Chapter 3: Avenger (by Ahmed & Di Vito): Focuses on her impact as an Avenger. Iron Man and Doctor Strange debate the morality of magical resurrection, while Captain America delivers a eulogy.
- The Death: Kamala died saving Mary Jane Watson from the villain Rabin. She used her shapeshifting powers to act as a decoy and was impaled from behind.
- Resurrection: Shortly after this issue, Kamala was resurrected as a mutant during the Hellfire Gala 2023 #1 using Krakoan technology.
- Erasing the Memory: By August 2023 in X-Men #25, Emma Frost used her psychic powers to erase the memory of Kamala’s death from the entire world, including her parents, to allow her a fresh start as a "New Mutant".
