Fallen Son: The Death of Captain America # 4 titled "Depression," was published in June 2007. It represents the fourth stage of grief following Steve Rogers' assassination, focusing on Spider-Man as he struggles with the crushing weight of loss.

Peter Parker, wearing his black suit in mourning, visits the grave of his Uncle Ben, reflecting on the many loved ones he has lost over the years—his parents, Gwen Stacy, her father, and now Captain America.

  • Conflict with Rhino: While at the cemetery, Peter's spider-sense alerts him to the Rhino. Believing the villain is committing a crime, Spider-Man attacks him. However, it is revealed that Rhino was only there to visit his own mother's grave.
  • The Beating: In the ensuing rage after his mother's headstone is accidentally broken, Rhino proceeds to beat Spider-Man severely. During the fight, Peter recalls a past battle against the Hulk where Captain America's arrival saved his life.
  • A Final Resolve: Realizing Cap is no longer there to save him, Spider-Man draws on Steve Rogers' example to find the strength to defeat Rhino on his own.
  • Wolverine’s Lesson: Wolverine, who has been shadowing Peter to ensure he is safe, confronts him afterward. Peter lashes out in despair, but Wolverine shares a poignant insight on grief, comparing it to a recurring "cannon shot through the stomach" that one never truly gets over, but eventually learns to live with.
  • Creative Team: Written by Jeph Loeb with artwork by David Finch.
  • Symbolism: Peter Parker wears the black Spider-Man costume as a sign of his deep depression and mourning.
  • Significant Reveal: Wolverine reveals to Peter that Captain America was the one who insisted Spider-Man join the New Avengers, even threatening to quit himself if the team did not accept him.
