Fallen Son: The Death of Captain America # 5 titled "Chapter Five: Acceptance," was published in August 2007. It concludes the miniseries based on the five stages of grief, focusing on Iron Man (Tony Stark) as the superhero community officially lays Steve Rogers to rest.

"Acceptance"

The story centers on two distinct funerals held for the fallen hero:

  • The Public Funeral: A massive ceremony with full military honors is held at Arlington National Cemetery. It is attended by thousands, including prominent heroes like Sam Wilson, Iron Man, and the Fantastic Four.
    • Tony Stark is scheduled to give the first eulogy but breaks down, able only to say, "It wasn't supposed to be this way...".
    • Sam Wilson (Falcon) takes over, delivering a powerful speech that highlights the man behind the shield, Steve Rogers, and how his return from the ice years prior inspired a new age of heroes.
  • The Secret Burial: Three days later, Stark, the Wasp, and Yellowjacket travel to the Arctic with the real casket. Stark reveals that the body in Arlington was a decoy to satisfy the public while protecting Steve’s remains from those who might try to steal them.
  • The Final Resting Place: They lower the casket into the frozen waters where Steve had once spent decades. Namor the Sub-Mariner appears and pledges that as long as he rules the oceans, Steve Rogers will rest in peace.
