Fantastic Four # 1 November 1, 1996 Volume 2 was the cornerstone of Marvel's "Heroes Reborn" event. Following the Onslaught crossover, where the Fantastic Four and Avengers were believed to have perished, they were actually reborn in a pocket dimension created by Franklin Richards.

"Renaissance"

The story modernizes the team's origin with several key updates:

  • Updated Origins: Ben Grimm is reimagined as a Gulf War pilot rather than a WWII veteran.
  • New Dynamics: Sue Storm is an ambitious corporate leader and scientific benefactor who funds Reed’s experiments, making her the team's "drive" rather than just a member.
  • The Mission: Instead of a simple space race to beat the Soviets, the team attempts to explore a Stellar Anomaly using Reed's new "Quantum Drive" aboard the spaceship Excelsior.
  • Conflict: S.H.I.E.L.D. agents attempt to seize the Excelsior project under orders from a mysterious figure connected to Victor von Doom. The team defies these orders, steals the ship, and encounters a cosmic anomaly that transforms them.
  • Industry Context: This relaunch was part of Marvel's effort to revitalize its core titles during a period of financial instability.
  • Creative Team: The series was written by Jim Lee and Brandon Choi, with pencils by Jim Lee and inks by Scott Williams. Lee’s involvement was a major event in 1996, bringing his high-energy "WildStorm" style to the classic Marvel franchise.
  • The Event: Heroes Reborn lasted for one year (12 issues) before the characters returned to the main Marvel Universe in the "Heroes Return" event.
  • Writers: Jim Lee & Brandon Choi
  • Artist: Jim Lee
  • Inker: Scott Williams
  • Colorists: Joe Chiodo & Martin Jimenez
