Flash & Green Lantern: The Brave and the Bold #1 (October 1999) is the first issue of a six-part limited series that explores the early friendship between Barry Allen (The Flash) and Hal Jordan (Green Lantern). Set shortly after the two helped establish the Justice League of America, the issue focuses on their first social outing and their initial struggle to find common ground.

Plot Summary: "Those Who Worship Evil's Might"

In this story, Barry Allen travels to Coast City for the first time to spend a weekend with his new teammate, Hal Jordan.

  • The Conflict: Their attempt at rest and relaxation is interrupted by an alien race known as the Doragians, who are using a "Psi-Virus" to siphon human aggression and evil into "living shadows" to fight their own wars.
  • The Virus: Both heroes are infected by the virus, which leeches away their desire to fight back. They must use teamwork to overcome the mental suppression and defeat their own shadow-selves.
  • The Contrast: The series highlights the personality clash between the brash, cocky Hal Jordan and the modest, clean-cut Barry Allen, demonstrating how they eventually formed an unbreakable bond.

Creative Team

The series was created by the same team behind the acclaimed JLA: Year One:

  • Writers: Mark Waid and Tom Peyer.
  • Artist: Barry Kitson (penciller and inker).
  • Colorists: Lovern Kindzierski and Digital Chameleon.
