Forever Evil: A.R.G.U.S. #1 (2013) is a tie-in miniseries to the main Forever Evil event, detailing the organization's collapse and the efforts of agent Steve Trevor to pick up the pieces after the Justice League's defeat. The issue focuses on the theme of trust and features flashbacks to A.R.G.U.S.'s formation.
Story Synopsis
The main story, titled "Issues of Trust," follows Steve Trevor immediately after the Crime Syndicate's takeover of Earth-Prime.
- The Aftermath: Steve Trevor is jolted awake by an adrenaline shot from Etta Candy in the decimated A.R.G.U.S. headquarters. He learns that much of the organization is in ruins, its agents' identities have been publicly leaked, and super-villains are hunting them down across the globe.
- The Crime Syndicate's Broadcast: A transmission from the Crime Syndicate announces the Justice League's apparent death, displaying their captured weapons and solidifying their global takeover.
- A New Mission: Despite the dire situation, Trevor wants to save the Justice League, but Etta urges him to focus on leadership. When a broken transmission warns that Deathstroke is attacking the White House, Trevor changes priorities to save the President and acquire the crucial A.R.G.U.S. Key.
- Confrontation with Deathstroke: Trevor leads the remaining agents to the White House, where he confronts Deathstroke, recalling a time he once trusted the mercenary. The issue ends on a cliffhanger as Trevor's signal "flatlines" after the confrontation, and a mysterious figure appears at the A.R.G.U.S. ruins.
Interspersed with the main story are flashbacks to Steve Trevor's past, including his first meeting with Wonder Woman and the President's initial pitch to create A.R.G.U.S. as a spy organization to monitor the Justice League.
