Frankenstein, Agent of S.H.A.D.E. # 1 September 2011 (titled "War of the Monsters, Part 1: Monster Town, USA") was a launch title for DC’s New 52 initiative. Written by Jeff Lemire with gritty, off-model art by Alberto Ponticelli, the series reimagines the classic monster as a sword-wielding special agent for a covert government organization.
"Monster Town, USA"
The issue introduces the Super Human Advanced Defense Executive (S.H.A.D.E.), a secret organization that operates out of the Ant Farm, a shrunken city suspended in a protective sphere.
-
The Mission: Frankenstein is recalled from a "vacation" on Mars to investigate a supernatural crisis in Bone Lake, Washington, which has been overrun by a massive army of monsters.
-
The Personal Stake: He learns his wife, The Bride, was the first agent sent to the scene and has since gone missing.
-
The Team: Against his preference for working alone, Frankenstein is assigned a new field team of "monsters": the Creature Commandos.
-
The Climax: The team enters the barricaded city and is immediately swarmed by creatures. They eventually discover a group of children and an elderly caretaker hiding in an underground church, where the woman warns Frankenstein to stay back.
-
Frankenstein: A centuries-old, pessimistic undead soldier who fights with a legendary three-foot sword and a "steam gun".
-
Father Time: The immortal leader of S.H.A.D.E., who inhabits a new body every decade; in this series, he appears as a young girl in a school uniform and domino mask.
-
Dr. Ray Palmer: Reimagined as the S.H.A.D.E. science liaison rather than the superhero Atom, he is the architect of the Ant Farm's shrinking technology.
-
The Creature Commandos: A team of genetically altered soldiers including Nina Mazursky (amphibian scientist), Warren Griffith (werewolf), Vincent Velcoro (vampire), and Khalis (mummy healer).
