Fullmetal Alchemist # 1 (Volume 1) introduces the journey of two brothers, Edward and Alphonse Elric, in a world where alchemy is a recognized science.

Story Summary: "The Two Alchemists"

The volume establishes the brothers' tragic backstory and their quest for redemption:

  • The Forbidden Taboo: As children, Edward and Alphonse attempted Human Transmutation to resurrect their deceased mother. This act is the ultimate alchemical taboo and carries a devastating cost according to the Law of Equivalent Exchange.
  • The Price Paid: The ritual failed, resulting in Alphonse losing his entire body and Edward losing his left leg. In a desperate move to save his brother, Edward sacrificed his right arm to bind Alphonse’s soul to a nearby suit of armor.
  • The Quest: Years later, Edward has become a State Alchemist—a government-sanctioned soldier equipped with mechanical "automail" limbs. Known as the "Fullmetal Alchemist," he and Alphonse travel the country searching for the legendary Philosopher’s Stone, an artifact that can supposedly bypass alchemical laws to restore their bodies.

Key Events in Volume 1

  • The City of Reole: The brothers investigate a religious leader, Father Cornello, who is performing "miracles" that they suspect are fueled by a Philosopher's Stone.
  • The Mining Town: They help free the residents of Youswell from a corrupt military officer, Lieutenant Loki, who is unfairly taxing the town.
  • Train Hijacking: Edward and Alphonse must thwart a terrorist group that takes a high-ranking general hostage on a train.
