Fury # 1, a double-sized one-shot published in May 2023, is a 60th-anniversary special that unites both Nick Fury Sr. (the original) and his son Nick Fury Jr. to tackle a new incarnation of the villainous S.C.O.R.P.I.O..

The comic blends a modern-day espionage thriller with flashback sequences to different eras of Nick Fury's history, from World War II to the 1960s, utilizing different art styles for each period.

  • The Lure: The story begins with Nick Fury Jr. at a loose end after the dissolution of S.H.I.E.L.D., when he is lured into an investigation by a mysterious new rogue agent calling herself S.C.O.R.P.I.O..
  • Decades-Old Mystery: Following a trail of "never-before-seen Fury Files", Fury Jr. uncovers a mystery spanning decades that ties back to his father's past and an earlier S.C.O.R.P.I.O., involving the legendary Zodiac Key.
  • Generations Unite: The investigation eventually leads Fury Jr. to the Moon's Blue Area, where he reunites with his father, Nick Fury Sr., who has been operating as the Watcher's replacement, "The Unseen".
  • Passing the Torch: The two Furies join forces to fight the new S.C.O.R.P.I.O., who escapes to pose a threat in future stories. In a significant character moment, Nick Fury Sr. decides to end his tenure as the Unseen and travel the multiverse, giving his blessing to his son to become the one, true Nick Fury of the main Marvel continuity (Earth-616).
