Generations: Banner Hulk & The Totally Awesome Hulk # 1 released in August 2017, is a pivotal character-focused one-shot that brings together the two primary holders of the Hulk mantle: Bruce Banner and Amadeus Cho.

A Meeting of Eras

The story is set within the "Vanishing Point," a time-bending space where heroes from the present meet their counterparts from the past. 

• The Encounter: Amadeus Cho is transported back in time to the early days of the original Hulk's run. He finds a paranoid, gruff Bruce Banner on the run from General "Thunderbolt" Ross and the U.S. Army.
• The Conflict: Amadeus, who initially views his "Totally Awesome" Hulk powers as a gift he can control, tries to help Banner by luring the military away with holograms. However, their intervention awakens a giant sea monster (a kaiju), forcing both to "Hulk out" to protect civilians.
• The Lesson: During the battle, Banner's Hulk (the "Savage Hulk") confronts Amadeus, revealing that the younger Hulk's perceived control is an illusion. Banner explains that they are not heroes, but rather "prison guards" for the monsters inside them. 
• The "Curse" Realization: The issue serves as a turning point for Amadeus Cho. He begins the story with youthful exuberance but ends it realizing that the Hulk's power is a curse that eventually consumes its host.
• Character Contrast: Writer Greg Pak highlights the stark differences between Banner's tragic, fugitive lifestyle and Cho's high-tech, confident approach to being a hero.
