• The War Years: Assuming the name Paul Jeffries, Sam enlists in the army. He fights alongside a young, inexperienced Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes, acting as a mentor to Steve during moments of self-doubt.
• Post-War Life: After the war, while Steve is lost in the ice, Sam remains in the 1940s. He marries, raises a family, becomes a pastor, and participates in the Civil Rights Movement as an activist.
• The Return of Cap: Sam lives long enough to see Steve Rogers finally found in the ice. In their elderly reunion, Sam (as Paul) encourages Steve again as he struggles to adapt to the modern world.
• The Present: On his deathbed in the past, Sam "wakes up" back in the present day. He has gained the perspective that he doesn't need to live up to Steve’s legacy; he has already built his own.
