Ghost Rider # 1 October 2, 2019 (Volume 9) begins the "King of Hell" story arc, redefining the roles of the two most prominent Spirits of Vengeance. Written by Ed Brisson and illustrated by Aaron Kuder, the issue explores the consequences of Johnny Blaze assuming the throne of Hell.
"King of Hell, Part 1"
The story picks up following the events of Doctor Strange: Damnation, where Johnny Blaze sacrificed himself to become the new ruler and warden of Hell to keep Mephisto’s demonic hordes contained.
- The Prison Break: Exploiting Johnny's relative inexperience as a ruler, a group of Mephisto-loyalist demons perform a ritual sacrifice to open a portal to Earth. While Blaze successfully intercepts many of them, several escape into New York City to possess human bodies.
- Danny Ketch's Struggle: On Earth, Danny Ketch is living a grim life, mourning his mother's recent passing and attempting to drown his sorrows at his bar, the Fadeaway. Unlike Johnny, Danny resents being a Ghost Rider and wants nothing to do with the Spirit of Vengeance.
- The Reunion: Forced to transform to fight a rampaging escapee demon, Danny is joined by Johnny, who has crossed the veil to Earth to hunt the fugitives.
- The Conflict: Johnny asks Danny for help rounding up the remaining demons. Danny refuses, wanting to be left alone, leading to a tense and antagonistic relationship between the brothers.
- The Threat in Hell: While Johnny is on Earth, Lilith (the "Mother of All Demons") begins a coup in Hell, looking to seize the throne for herself.
- Protagonists: Johnny Blaze (King of Hell/Ghost Rider) and Danny Ketch (Earth's Spirit of Vengeance).
- Antagonists: Lilith, escaped demons, and the lingering influence of a currently imprisoned Mephisto.
