Ghost Rider Annual # 1 October 1993 is a 64-page oversized issue featuring Danny Ketch as the Spirit of Vengeance. It is primarily notable for introducing the villain Night Terror, a specialized vampire created by a shadow intelligence agency.

"Taste of Power!"

The primary narrative, written by Howard Mackie with pencils by Chris Bachalo, introduces Carl Blake, an operative transformed into the vampire Night Terror.

  • Night Terror's Origin: A former contract killer who became a vampire, Blake suffers from memory loss and realizes he absorbs the memories of those whose blood he drinks.
  • The Conflict: After killing gangsters in a park, Night Terror is confronted by Ghost Rider. During the fight, Night Terror actually bites Ghost Rider, absorbing some of his power and essence before fleeing to a nondescript office building.
  • The Climax: The office is revealed to be a base for the agency that created him. They trigger a self-destruct to hide their tracks, but Night Terror escapes by turning into mist while Ghost Rider rescues the sole human survivor.
  • "Night Terror: The Origin": A second story focuses on Night Terror searching for his own history, though it leaves many questions unanswered.
  • The Stone-Turner: A third story introduces a minor new villain who can turn people to stone, though he never appeared in subsequent comics.
  • Pin-ups: The issue includes character pin-ups illustrated by Mark Buckingham, Isaac Cordova, and Brad Vancata.

Major First Appearance: Night Terror

  • Night Terror (Carl Blake): The primary debut of the issue. He is a "vampire" created through mystical and biological experimentation by a shadowy government agency.
  • Unique Abilities: Unlike traditional vampires, Night Terror absorbs the memories and skills of those whose blood he consumes. In this debut, he even bites Ghost Rider, temporarily absorbing some of the Spirit of Vengeance's essence.

The issue features several other minor first appearances across its three stories:

  • The Wanderer: A government agent who appears in the secondary story, "Lost in the Night".
  • Rigor Mortis: A minor antagonist introduced in the third story, "The Worm Turns".
  • Ms. Malone and Mr. Balin: Supporting characters introduced in the main "Taste of Power" storyline.
  • Gang Members: Characters named Dis, Trash, and L.J. make their first appearances as members of a local street gang.
