Green Lantern #23.1: Relic is a standalone origin story and prologue released on September 4, 2013, as part of DC Comics' "Villains Month" event. It introduces the tragic backstory of Relic, a massive, god-like being who serves as the primary antagonist for the subsequent "Lights Out" crossover event.

Core Premise and Plot

The issue functions as a historical parable about the destruction of a previous universe.

  • The Lightsmiths: In a universe that existed before the current one, various "Lightsmiths" (counterparts to the Lantern Corps) harnessed the emotional spectrum for power.
  • Relic's Warning: Relic was once a scientist who discovered that the emotional spectrum was a finite reservoir of energy, not an infinite source. He warned the Lightsmiths that their constant use of the light was draining the very essence of existence, but they mocked him and called him a "relic" for his views.
  • Universal Collapse: When the reservoir finally ran dry, the previous universe lost its cohesiveness and collapsed. Relic, the sole survivor, passed through the "Godwall" (Source Wall) and was remade as a giant in the current Prime Universe.
  • Mission of Destruction: Now believing he is the only one who can save the current universe from the same fate, Relic is determined to hunt down and destroy all Lantern Corps to prevent them from depleting the emotional reservoir once again.

Unique Visual Style

The issue is notable for its unconventional format, designed to feel like a series of historical slides or a fable.

  • Format: Instead of standard panels, the book consists entirely of full-page splash shots (with one two-page spread), totaling only 19 panels across 20 pages.
  • Lenticular Cover: The physical release featured a 3D lenticular motion cover, a hallmark of the 2013 Villains Month initiative.
