Green Lantern Corps #1 (Volume 3, published in 2011 as part of the New 52 reboot) re-establishes John Stewart and Guy Gardner as the primary Green Lanterns on Earth and details their decision to leave their troubled normal lives behind to investigate the mysterious, brutal murders of fellow Corps members across the universe.

Main Plot

The issue sets up a space-faring mystery right from the start, as two Green Lanterns in Sector 3599 are suddenly and brutally killed by an unseen attacker who can seemingly bypass their ring's defenses.

On Earth, both Guy Gardner and John Stewart are struggling to fit into normal civilian life:

  • Guy Gardner interviews for a football coaching job but finds his reputation as a Green Lantern overshadows his application.
  • John Stewart, an architect, is frustrated when developers prioritize cost over the safety measures he designed into a new building, leading him to use his ring to make a point about the value of life.

Both characters feel out of place and realize they belong in the Corps. They meet up in Earth's orbit and decide to head to Oa. There, they learn of the dead Lanterns and volunteer to lead an elite strike force to investigate the murders.

The issue ends with Guy and John assembling a diverse team of alien Green Lanterns (including Hannu, Isamot Kol, Sheriff Mardin, Vandor, and Brik) and arriving on the alien world of Nerro, which has been completely drained of water. They discover the corpses of the planet's inhabitants and two impaled Green Lanterns, a grim message left by their new enemy, later known as the "Keepers".
