Grifter # 1, released on September 14, 2011, is the debut of the character's first ongoing solo series within the mainstream DC Universe. Published as part of The New 52 line-wide relaunch, it reintegrates the former Wildstorm antihero into a new continuity where he is hunted by both the government and a secret alien threat.
"17 Minutes"
The story reimagines Cole Cash as a former U.S. Army Special Ops soldier turned con artist who gains unwanted supernatural abilities.
-
The Abduction: Cole is abducted by the Daemonites, an alien race capable of possessing human bodies. He is held for 17 days while a Daemonite attempts to take over his form.
-
The Awakening: For unknown reasons, Cole wakes prematurely, aborting the transfer. The failed process leaves him with a permanent telepathic link that allows him to hear Daemonite communications and see them in their true form, even when they are possessing humans.
-
The Conflict: Labeled a terrorist after hijacking a plane to kill hidden Daemonites, Cole becomes the DCU's most wanted man. He is hunted by various intelligence agencies and his own brother, Max Cash, a military special operative tasked with his apprehension.
-
The Disguise: To hide his identity while hunting the aliens, Cole dons a red mask and trench coat from a costume shop, officially becoming Grifter.
-
Grifter (Cole Cash): The protagonist, a charming but lethal con artist who can now "see" an invisible alien invasion.
-
Max Cash: Cole's brother and a military operative sent to capture him.
-
Pandora: A mysterious figure who makes a brief cameo appearance in the sky during the issue, a hallmark of all New 52 #1 issues.
