Hardcase # 1 , released in June 1993, is the premiere issue of the flagship series for Malibu Comics' Ultraverse imprint. Written by James Hudnall and illustrated by Jim Callahan and Norm Breyfogle, it introduced one of the universe's most powerful "Ultras."

Plot Summary: "Winners Never Quit"

The story follows Thomas Hawke, better known as Hardcase, a veteran hero with tragic ties to the early days of the Ultraverse:

  • The Backstory: Hardcase was the leader of The Squad, the world's first team of four "ultrahumans." During a brutal battle against an inhuman monster called NM-E, two members were killed and one was left in a permanent coma, leaving Hardcase as the sole survivor.
  • The Retirement: Traumatized by the loss, Hawke retires from hero work and moves to Los Angeles to pursue a career as a Hollywood action star.
  • The Return: While filming a movie, Hawke is urged by a police officer to return to his duties. When a new ultra-powered criminal named Head Knocker robs a nearby bank and kills several people, Hardcase finally intervenes. After defeating the villain, he publicly announces his return to superheroics.
