Havok and Wolverine: Meltdown # 1, published in December 1988, is the first issue of a four-part limited series. The story, written by Walter and Louise Simonson and painted by Jon J. Muth and Kent Williams, begins with Havok and Wolverine on vacation in Mexico, where they are inadvertently drawn into a plot involving the Chernobyl nuclear disaster and international intrigue.
- The Chernobyl Connection: The issue opens with the villains General Meltdown and Doctor Neutron playing chess and discussing how they orchestrated the Chernobyl nuclear reactor meltdown to further their goals of stopping Soviet Premier Mikhail Gorbachev's reform agenda.
- Mexican Vacation Interrupted: Unaware of these events, X-Men members Havok (Alex Summers) and Wolverine (Logan) are on leave in Mexico. After a bar fight, they escape with a woman named Scarlett McKenzie in her car, only to be chased by gunmen with lasers. Havok is forced to use his plasma powers to fight them off, which reveals his identity to observers who were monitoring them.
- Betrayal and "Death": The heroes are ambushed when Scarlett suddenly shoots them. Wolverine wakes up in a hospital to find that the bullets were laced with the bubonic plague, and he is told that Havok has died.
- Logan's Suspicion: A suspicious and enraged Wolverine, recovering from the plague thanks to his healing factor, goes to Havok's grave to investigate. Upon digging up the coffin, he finds only a piñata filled with rocks, confirming a deception and a larger conspiracy.
- Artwork: The series is noted for its distinctive, fully painted artwork by Jon J. Muth and Kent Williams, a departure from standard comic book art at the time.
- Tone: The story is characterized by a mature, gritty tone with visceral violence, which was why it was released as an adult-oriented, direct-sale series.
