Hawk & Dove # 1, published in October 1988, is a significant DC Comics issue that revitalized the classic superhero duo for the post-Crisis on Infinite Earths era. This five-issue miniseries is highly regarded for introducing a new, female version of Dove and for being the first mainstream comic work of superstar artist Rob Liefeld.

Story Synopsis: "Ghosts and Demons!"

The narrative focuses on Hank Hall (Hawk), who has become violent and unstable since the death of his brother, Don (the original Dove), during the Crisis on Infinite Earths.

  • The New Partnership: While Hank is on the edge of a psychological breakdown, a woman named Dawn Granger is chosen by the Lords of Order to become the new Dove.
  • A Balance of Forces: The story establishes that their powers are derived from the eternal struggle between the Lords of Chaos and Order. Hawk represents anger and unpredictable behavior, while Dove embodies calmness and strategy.
  • Conflict: The duo must learn to work together for the first time to thwart an attack by the "science terrorist" Alexander Quirk and eventually face the super-powered villain Kestrel, who is intent on Hawk's destruction.

Key Significance & Creative Team

  • First Appearance of Dawn Granger: This issue marks the debut of the second Dove, who remains the most enduring incarnation of the character.
  • Rob Liefeld's Debut: This was Liefeld's first major work for a "Big Two" publisher before he went on to fame with New Mutants and X-Force.
  • The Kesels: The series was written by the husband-and-wife team Karl and Barbara Kesel, who shifted the characters away from 1960s political allegories toward mystical superheroics.
