Hawkeye # 1 January 1, 1994 is the first issue of a four-part limited series (Volume 2) that presents a darker, grittier solo adventure for Clint Barton.
"Shafted"
Set shortly after the apparent death of his wife, Mockingbird (Bobbi Morse), in Avengers West Coast #100, the story finds a grieving Hawkeye brooding in the wilderness of the Canadian Rockies.
- The Discovery: While hunting, Clint stumbles upon a secret high-tech facility hidden near the Arctic Circle.
- The Conflict: He discovers the facility is a base for the Secret Empire and sees his former mentor, Trick Shot, hunting a mysterious "dog-man" creature.
- The Rescue: Hawkeye intervenes to save the wounded creature—later named Rover—and manages to drive off Trick Shot and his new partner, the dart-wielding assassin Javelynn.
- The Villain: It is revealed that the installation is overseen by the classic villain Viper (Madame Hydra).
- Character Debuts: This issue marks the first appearances of Javelynn and Rover.
- 90s Style: The series is noted for its "90s grit," featuring a bearded, brooding Clint Barton who acts more like a survivalist than a standard superhero.
- Creative Team: Written by Chuck Dixon, with pencils by Scott Kolins and inks by Tim Dzon.
