Hawkman # 0, released in October 1994, was part of DC's "Zero Month" event following the Zero Hour: Crisis in Time crossover. It established a new, highly complex status quo for the character by merging multiple versions of Hawkman into a single entity.
"Eyes of the Hawk"
The issue follows the new Katar Hol as he struggles to understand his transformed state after the events of Zero Hour.
-
The Transformation: During the climax of Zero Hour, several "Hawk-Champions"—including the modern Katar Hol, the Golden Age Carter and Shiera Hall, and a powerful Thanagarian Hawk Avatar—were fused into one "Hawkgod" entity.
-
New Abilities: Reborn from this merger, Katar Hol possesses new, organic wings and bird-like eyes. He also gains the mystical ability to see people's auras, allowing him to perceive their true intentions or spiritual states.
-
The Conflict: While Katar and his allies (Naomi Carter and Hawkwoman) try to comprehend his new nature, he is drawn into a "grudge match" with a Chicago gang lord named Bad Blood.
-
Resolution: Katar uses his enhanced abilities to hunt down and defeat the gang, ultimately impaling Bad Blood with his katar. The issue ends with the revelation that a mysterious figure named Viper is observing this new Hawkman for future study.
-
Hawkman (Katar Hol): The newly merged protagonist, now an "avatar" of the hawk-god.
-
Bad Blood: A Chicago-based gang leader who serves as the issue's primary antagonist.
-
Naomi Carter & Hawkwoman (Shayera Thal): Katar's closest allies who must now come to terms with his alien, fragmented personality.
