Hawkman # 1 (2002), titled "First Impressions," was the launch of Volume 4 of the Hawkman series. Released on March 6, 2002, the issue was written by Geoff Johns and James Robinson, with art by Rags Morales and Michael Bair. 

The story follows Carter Hall (Hawkman) as he attempts to build a new life after his resurrection in the JSA series. 

  • New Home: Hawkman and Kendra Saunders (Hawkgirl) move to St. Roch, Louisiana, a city filled with history and mystery.
  • The Mystery: Hawkgirl begins investigating the decade-old murder of her parents. This leads them to the Stonechat Museum, where they meet curator Oliver Evans, an old friend of the Golden Age Hawks.
  • The Quest: Oliver informs them that his son, Danny, is missing in India and may have information about Kendra's parents.
  • Conflict: A corrupt entrepreneur named Kristopher Roderic hires criminals to retrieve a mystical artifact, the Third Eye of Shiva, and sends a hitman named Bloque to kill Hawkman. Hawkman and Hawkgirl easily defeat Bloque and prepare to head to India.
  • Tense Partnership: Throughout the issue, Carter struggles to rekindle his romantic relationship with Kendra. However, Kendra—who has no memory of their past lives together—insists they remain strictly professional partners. 
  • Hawkman (Carter Hall): The reincarnated Egyptian prince trying to reclaim his legacy and his love.
  • Hawkgirl (Kendra Saunders): A modern-day warrior struggling with a past she doesn't remember.
  • Oliver Evans: Curator of the Stonechat Museum and ally to the Hawks.
  • Bloque: A powerhouse villain introduced in this issue as a threat to Hawkman.
  • Kristopher Roderic: The primary antagonist of the early series, pulling strings from the shadows.
