Hulk # 1 2022 kicks off a radical new era for the character under the creative team of writer Donny Cates and artist Ryan Ottley. This run, known for the "Starship Hulk" status quo, shifts the focus from the body horror of the previous Immortal Hulk series to a high-octane, sci-fi action epic.

"Starship Hulk"

Following a mysterious and tragic disaster in El Paso, Bruce Banner decides he must take absolute control of the Hulk to protect the world. He uses a combination of advanced science and stolen technology to fracture his mind into three distinct parts, effectively turning the Hulk's physical body into a biological starship.

  • The Bridge (Banner's Mind Palace): Bruce Banner’s consciousness resides in a "Mind Palace" designed like a high-tech starship cockpit. From here, he "pilots" the Hulk's physical body as if it were a vessel.
  • The Engine Room (The Hulk's Prison): The Hulk’s psyche is trapped in a mental "Engine Room"—a simulated battlefield where he is forced to fight increasingly powerful enemies.
  • The Fuel: The more the Hulk rages in the Engine Room, the more power is generated for the physical body on the outside. This allows Banner to "throttle" the Hulk's strength levels with scientific precision.
  • Conflict with the Avengers: Banner's actions make the Hulk a pariah once more. The issue features a brutal battle with Iron Man, who uses a new celestial-powered "Hulkbuster" armor in an attempt to stop him.
  • Mission to the Stars: Disillusioned with humanity and his cycle of destruction, Banner intends to use his new "Starship" to leave Earth behind forever and venture into a pocket dimension.
  • The Real Monster: The story poses a central, chilling question: Is the Hulk really the danger, or does the Hulk exist solely to protect the world from the true monster—Bruce Banner?
