Human Bomb # 1, released by DC Comics on December 5, 2012 (with a February 2013 cover date), is the first issue of a four-part limited series. Part of the New 52 initiative, it reimagines the classic Quality Comics character as a modern-day war veteran in a contemporary setting.
The debut issue introduces Michael Taylor, an ex-Marine and decorated war hero who has recently returned to civilian life after serving in Afghanistan.
-
The Nightmare: Michael suffers from severe Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and recurring nightmares where he uncontrollably explodes during a Medal of Honor ceremony at the White House.
-
Ground Zero: Currently working as a construction worker at the site of the new World Trade Center in Manhattan, Michael witnesses a series of devastating, unprovoked explosions across the city and the nation.
-
The Conspiracy: He discovers that these attacks are orchestrated by "human suicide bombers"—individuals who, like himself, were captured and experimented upon by a clandestine organization called C.R.O.W.N. during their military deployment.
-
Awakening Powers: Unlike the other sleeper agents who simply detonate and die, Michael realizes he can control and channel the explosive energy into powerful blasts, effectively making him the "ultimate bomb" designed by the conspiracy.
-
Michael Taylor (Human Bomb): A blue-collar war veteran who discovers he has become a living weapon.
-
Uncle Sam & S.H.A.D.E.: An African-American version of Uncle Sam and the organization S.H.A.D.E. make a cameo at the end of the issue, hinting at a larger connection to the Freedom Fighters lore.
-
Writers: Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti.
-
Artist/Penciller: Jerry Ordway.
-
Colorist: Hi-Fi Design.
