Hunt for Wolverine # 1, published in April 2018, is a one-shot issue that serves as the official start of a major Marvel storyline and the follow-up to the Death of Wolverine event, setting the stage for Logan's eventual return. The issue establishes that Wolverine's body has gone missing from its secret grave and launches multiple teams across the Marvel Universe to find him. 

The issue is split into two parts, setting up the different facets of the "hunt". 

• The Empty Grave: The first part of the story begins with the cyborg villains, the Reavers, tracking down the X-Men's secret cabin in the Canadian wilderness where Wolverine's adamantium-encased body was left as a memorial. They intend to steal and sell the body for parts and upgrades. The X-Men (including Kitty Pryde, Storm, Colossus, and Firestar) arrive and defeat the Reavers, but in the process discover the horrifying truth: the adamantium shell is an empty husk, and Wolverine's body is gone.
• Rallying the Troops: Shaken by the discovery, Kitty Pryde takes charge and realizes they need help beyond the X-Men to find out what happened to Logan's remains. The issue ends as she reaches out to various allies across the Marvel Universe, including Daredevil, Iron Man, Spider-Man, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage, to begin a global search.
• Villainous Interest: The X-Men aren't the only ones searching. Information about the empty grave reaches Wolverine's enemies, such as Lady Deathstrike, Sabretooth, and Daken, who also vow to track him down.
• Wolverine Sighted: Throughout the issue, there are small "Where is Wolverine?" teaser panels, which show Logan (alive but keeping a low profile) having various fleeting interactions or near-misses with other heroes like Loki and Hydro-Man.
