Iceman # 1 June 2017 Volume 3 launched the first-ever ongoing solo series for Bobby Drake. Written by Sina Grace with art by Alessandro Vitti, the issue serves as a character-driven reintroduction that focuses on Bobby’s personal identity and his evolving role as an Omega-level mutant.

Self-Discovery

The issue explores Bobby’s struggle to reconcile his past with his future following the revelation that he is gay.

  • The Adult vs. The Teen: The story contrasts the adult Bobby with his time-displaced teenage self, who is already living more authentically.
  • Family Conflict: A major narrative thread involves Bobby's difficult relationship with his critical parents, who struggle to accept his mutant and superhero lifestyle.
  • Dating: The issue uses the framing device of Bobby filling out an online dating profile to explore his awkwardness and desire to build a life outside of being an X-Man.
  • Purifier Attack: While helping a new mutant named Zach, Bobby is forced to defend a hospital from an attack by the Purifiers, a group of mutant-hating religious zealots.
  • Parental Health Scare: The action is interrupted by personal news: Bobby's father has suffered a heart attack, leading to a tense and emotional confrontation at the hospital.
  • Omega-Level Power: Despite his "class clown" reputation, the issue demonstrates Bobby's immense power as he takes down the Purifiers and mentors younger mutants.

The series was noted for its "emotional honesty" and received praise for its portrayal of the coming-out experience as an adult. It was nominated for a GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Comic Book.
