Impulse #1, released in April 1995, titled "The Single Synapse Theory," launched the first solo series for Bart Allen, the hyperactive 30th-century descendant of the Flash.
Plot Summary
The story follows Bart Allen as he attempts to adjust to a "normal" life in the 20th-century town of Manchester, Alabama, under the guardianship of speedster mentor Max Mercury.
- A Heroic Distraction: Just before his first day of school, Bart accidentally interrupts a missile test while exploring a silo site. He inadvertently diverts a heat-seeking missile aimed at a rival company's hover-tank, catching the attention of corrupt industrialist Martin Beaumont.
- The Terrors of Ninth Grade: Bart starts his first day as a ninth grader at Manchester Junior High. Unfamiliar with 20th-century customs, he accidentally reveals his futuristic heritage and connection to the Flash in a classroom autobiography assignment, which Max warns him to keep secret.
- A Dangerous Investigation: Intrigued by the missile incident, Impulse returns to the silo site after school to investigate. He is lured into a darkened room where armored guards equipped with night vision goggles prepare to shoot him, ending the issue on a cliffhanger.
